|

For the most part it's getting fairly solid reviews this far. I think it'd be one to have, probably not the end all and be all. But I'd pick it up if I had a bunch of friends on it. What do you guys think?

Unreal Tournament III sales may not be strong on the PC, but reviews have been positive for the latest installment in the frag-fest series. It appears outlets -- deviating from standard practice -- are trying to view the PC and PS3 versions under different lenses. The PC version (per usual) is the better option if you've got the rig to handle the Unreal Engine 3 game, but the PS3 version wasn't a toss-away port here. The reviews below are from the PS3 version of the UT3 reviews.
* IGN (90/100): "Players will find a few more differences with the PS3 version. While the recent 1.1 patch for PC streamlined the in-game menus and interface to a degree, you're stuck with the old menus in the PS3 version. Though they can at times be irritating, the often clunky menus really aren't that big a deal, especially when compared to UT3's fantastic gameplay. ... If you've never played Unreal Tournament before, this is a must-own game on PS3. It's still the most frantic, engrossingly intense first-person shooter formula out there and even after eight years still proves to be wildly entertaining."
* GameDaily (90/100): "The real significance with Unreal Tournament III on the PS3, however, is the Community support. For the first time in a console FPS, you're finally able to implement your own user-created mods – maps, modes, player creations – into the game. It's a feature that will no doubt take a lot of time and dedication. To devoted fans, however, it's a stellar inclusion. You're also able to receive messages, set up friend lists, seek out instant action matches and more. Unreal Tournament continues to live up to its name, and part three on the PS3 is just as thrilling as its PC counterpart. Never mind its shortened multiplayer count and lack of extra modes -- there's enough here to keep you fragging through the holidays."
* 1UP (80/100): "As for today, the arrival of Unreal Tournament 3 stands to be one of the highlights of the year for Net-connected PS3 owners. For many, this will be a fresh experience, lessening the impact of the modest mode options and lack of some fan favorites from prior versions. ... Whether or not you'll find a community playing this game in a year leads back to that earlier question of just how close PC and console gaming have become...and your response to Unreal Tournament 3 will help shape the answer. "

GoW models have been floating around since before GoW PC was launched
And GoW gameplay elements are already in a mod for UT2004
but that's just outlandish... _________________ I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast!

Sweet so you can pay top price for a brand new game so that you can play a game that you could have played 3 times over, missing the correct audio elements, OST, storylines and cut scenes. That's not gaming that's dumb. _________________ There's only one Return and it ain't of the King it's of the Jedi!

Wait, first it's outlandish, now it's been done you think mods are dumb... I guess Counterstrike was dumb, so are all the big companies hiring mod authors to work on their games, maybe BioShock and GoW are dumb because they are built using the same tools available to the modders, they could pretty much be called UT3 total conversions as well...rofl _________________ I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast!

So it's been done? Sweet when you pick up UT3 for christmas can I come around and play Gears of War with you on your playstation?
It is outlandish to think that UT3 mods will run something that is comparable to an existing game using a different engine on a different platform. At best you'll have a weak knock off. Yes it's dumb because it's stubborn people that want a game but are unwilling to budge on the platform issue. I want Uncharted and don't see a great deal of value in the PS3 but I'm not going to be a dick about it and spend all my free time trying mod up UT3 so I can play some weaker than piss version of Uncharted. So yes it is both outlandish and dumb. Things like counter strike have validity because what they did was use the Half Life engine to create a new game not create a lame rip off.

BioShock was initially developed using an enhanced Tribes: Vengeance game engine, the highly modified version of the Unreal Engine 2.5 technology used by other previous Irrational titles including SWAT 4, and SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate. In an interview at E3 in May 2006, Levine announced a switch to a modified Unreal Engine 3.0.
OK, so first it was a Tribes Total Conversion, now it's built on the U3 engine.
As part of Epic's guideline for using the Unreal engine which is OO, a modified class is submitted back to Epic and absorbed into the code library. Wether or not 2K have done this is anyones guess, but if they haven't done it, it is possible to add classes to the U3 engine the same way that 2K would.
Just as Mod's built on the PC version of U3 in GoW have access to the GoW AI, the latest version of U3 is in UT3, so I can make an outlandish claim that there may be access to the GoW and BioShock classes.
BioShock is built on Unreal Engine 3, so it's an Unreal Mod.
The latest version of U3 is in UT3, since UT3 is made by Epic themselves, I expect it to be the best version of U3.
Why do you think it's called the Unreal Engine? You don't see 2K games claiming Unreal Tournament was built on the BioShock engine do you sweet heart? _________________ I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast!

Man you're going to miss so much because you can't accept other platforms have stuff that is unavailable to the PS3. It's a shame really. Please don't misinterpret that as anti-PS3 as it too has it's merits and that's why I'll own one. _________________ There's only one Return and it ain't of the King it's of the Jedi!

Who said anything about other platforms, I said...
I wonder how long before we see BioShock / Gears of War and possibly even a Halo total conversion mod...
and all of a sudden your claiming that's an outlandish claim and then making outlandish claims like BioShock wasn't really built on the Unreal engine, so isn't really an Unreal mod.
For the record I've played BioShock and think it's an above average Shooter, same with GoW, there are other games out there that aren't shooters that interest me more. _________________ I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast!

Why would you want Bioshock or GoW mods if it wasn't to play on another platform? I mean wouldn't you just play the games on the 360 if it wasn't about other platforms? This whole argument at it's core is about other platforms my friend. At the end of the day whatever you think is cool with me, I'll leave you alone....

I guess you didn't read the Gears for All intro and how the aim of the mod was to port the mechanics and gameplay of Gears to a platform that people with old PC's could still play...
Dammit, UT3 arrived at my house at 10am this morning only no one was here to sign for it :( _________________ I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast!
