Sony tests digital copies on DVD releases that can be played on PS3/PSP/PC
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has been experimenting embedding digital copies of its movies on DVD. Wal-Mart has been exclusively offering six Sony catalog titles that have an embedded a digital copy for playback on the PSP/PS3/PC since late last month. The embedded copies expire within three to six months of going on sale at Wal-Mart, and you must register online to obtain a code to let you use it. Sony is apparently also hoping to raise the profile of the PSP as a movie playback device, as all you need to do is place the file on a memory stick.
quote:
The embedded copies—within Blood & Chocolate, Bobby Z, The Contractor, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Wind Chill—all expire within three to six months of going on sale at Wal-Mart. Additionally, titles may be offered widely at retail after 30 to 60 days. Wal-Mart has priced the discs at $13.72.
In order to enjoy these copies, buyers register online using an individual code that is included in the DVD. That registration will notify people about whether the file has timed out or not. Sony reserves the right to extend the life of the file at any time.
One possible benefit to a short-view copy is the ability to curb rampant file-sharing or copyright infringement.
In January, Sony also offered a copy embedded in the two-disc special edition of Resident Evil: Extinction exclusively at Wal-Mart.
At the same time, Sony is marketing digital copies on the DVD premieres Hero Wanted and Diamond Dogs, both due April 29. The digital files on these titles appear not to expire after a limited time.
Sony is unique among studios testing digital copy in its use of catalog and DVD premiere titles. Warner Home Video and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment are plugging files into major new releases, including March 18 release I Am Legend and April 15 release Juno, respectively.
Sony also is the only studio so far to steer those files to play on Sony gaming consoles. Plus, it is pioneering the placement of limited-view files.
“We are testing the whole concept right now,” said Lexine Wong, Sony senior executive VP of worldwide marketing. “There are space requirements to include files, so we’re choosing titles that don’t feature a lot of bonus features [in order to fit copies]. Also, we’re choosing titles that would resonate with customers that like PSP, with [action] titles like Diamond Dogs and Hero Wanted.”
Sony is additionally angling for a one-two punch using digital copy to elevate both the value of DVDs and the PSP. Although a hit for gaming, the PSP has struggled as a movie playback device. Sony is the only major studio releasing new film content for the PSP, which is produced by sister unit Sony Computer Entertainment. MTV also has licensed certain TV programs for the console.

Sony, Sony, Sony..........
I do not think that will work. If I am buying something I want it forever or until the dog scratches the shit out of the disk. (Sorry Damo. I will get you another spiderman 2.)
If they are trying to curb copying, give it away and have heaps of comercials through it. And then have a buy one for $30.00 and no commercials. Or Download from a site but have it so you have to watch an add before the download begins and have a question they must answer right to get the download, EG is that beer commercial what was the brand of beer.
I don't know
all i know is that I do not like timed purchases. And $13.00 is way to high to be a higher price _________________ I have splet somethnig worng, My Bag. Now get over it. |

I'm not sure why you are upset, a free legal digital copy bundled on BD or DVD to watch on something like a psp is much better than an illegal rip, especially if it doesn't expire like downloaded movies _________________ I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast!

This is old news gents, apple is currently nurturing this tech through various means. Family Guy Blue Harvest came with "itune-i-fied" soft copy on the disc (in the US to start with) so rather than testing this is already in the market. The rest of the studios (READ: everyone) that signed onto Apples movie rentals dealio are expected to follow suit with their optical storage medium. Expect this to be standard world wide type deal very soon. _________________ There's only one Return and it ain't of the King it's of the Jedi!

Youve got it slightly backwards there D. The illegal rip will not expire the embedded one from Sony will.
Yet again the studios are stiffing legit customers and almost forcing them to download if they dont want to be limited by the DRM. _________________

I thought the article says they don't expire...
Go Apple... first they rip off Xerox, then the Walkman, what next? A DS rip off? _________________ I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast!
